Default Canarian Weekly: Super bridge will ring the changes

LIKE an elaborate Lego set, a green, sprawling snake is clicking into place across the main Avenida Chayofita road, linking Los Cristianos with Playa de Las Americas.

Few people could be bothered to use the rusty, metal bridge, which was an eyesore near the main roundabout. But that now lies in a crumpled heap on nearby waste land.

At the same time, the concrete bridge, over the dual carriageway to the outdoor-pool complex, is into its last weeks of service.

Two into one will go, and already the stylish, green arrival, with its Olympic-style white hoops, is gathering approving glances, and quite a fan club.

Footings and wider ramps are emerging, to link up to the new bridge, and the connecting spots look remarkably easy to pop into place.

But they require heavy-lifting equipment, and plenty of room. Most of the delicate work has taken place at night, and the final stages will soon complete the puzzle.

The walkways will be considerably longer for pedestrians, because of their shallow angle, but they will be ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs. And extra lighting will ensure safety, which is a key consideration for Arona Council.

The fountain, on the main Los Cristianos roundabout, has already offered a more modern, and pleasing, welcome to visitors. And soon, the new bridge will give a much better impression on the western approach.
