Default Canarian Weekly: Dare-devil fire-fighters pull off cliffside rescue

FIRE-FIGHTERS helped pull off the daring rescue of a paraglider, left perched precariously on a ledge, 100-metres (300ft) above the ground, on a cliff-face on Spain?s Costa Blanca.

A gust of wind had blown the 21-year-old man off-course and on to the cliff face in the Sierra de Redov?n, where he was suspended for an hour or so, before being rescued by the emergency services.

Fire-fighters, police and a rescue helicopter were quickly on the scene, after the 112 emergency control centre received a call.

The rescue was complicated because the helicopter, initially, could not get close enough, without the risk of it dislodging the young man, who could have fallen to his death because his chute?s lines were tangled.

Instead, two fire-fighters bounced down 60 metres, from the top of the cliff to the point where the paraglider was suspended.

They cut the lines of the paraglider?s chute and harness, so they would fall away.

Only then could the helicopter pilot access the area and rescue the man, who had suffered leg injuries.

He was taken, rather shakily, straight to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela for treatment.
