Default Canarian Weekly: Ecstasy and the Agoney of Adeje?s lively fiestas

THE ?descent? of the Virgin Mary and the Agoney concert are the headline acts in the first week of the Adeje fiestas.

Adeje?s Patronal Fiestas, in honour of ?la Virgen de la Encarnaci?n and Santa ?rsula? began, officially, with the presentation, on Wednesday morning, of the representatives of the borough?s different neighbourhoods.

Present were Adeje Mayor Jos? Miguel Rodr?guez Fraga, and Parish Priest Honorio Campos Guti?rrez, along with the town?s Cultural Councillor, Adolfo Alonso.

Activities began yesterday (Thursday) with the traditional ?descent? of the statue of the Santa ?rsula Church?s Virgin Mary from the high altar, and will end with the ?romer?a? (pilgrim parade) on 21st October.

The Mayor said, ?This is a time to remember who we are, and what is important in our lives, and to share what we have with others?.

He added that Adeje had been paying homage to the figure of the ?Virgen de La Encarnaci?n? for over 300 years, when she was deemed to have saved the area from a plague of locusts.

The seven representatives of the Adeje neighbourhoods were also presented during the morning.

Mayor Fraga told the press in attendance that, unlike many other towns, Adeje did not elect a festival queen.

Instead, it invites representatives from every neighbourhood to take part, together, in all of the patronal events. In this way all parts of the borough are present throughout the celebrations.

This year?s representatives are Yuliza Chinea (Las Nieves), Daniela Casanova Vargas (Tijoco, La Hoya), Valeria Hern?ndez Caballero (Los Olivos), Gara Negr?n D?az (Arme?ime), Teresa Garc?a Acosta (La Caleta), Ana Andrea P?rez Esquivel (Fa?ab?), Thal?a Mart?n Gonz?lez (Adeje Casco) and Sara Hern?ndez Hern?ndez, who will represent Adeje at the Miss Sur competition.

Meanwhile, Adeje youngsters will have lots to keep them amused over the next two weeks, with specific events designed for them during the local festival celebrations.

The main parade takes place tomorrow (Saturday), from 8.30pm, at the bottom of the Calle Grande.

There will be representatives from the Adeje neighbourhoods, as well characters from stage and screen, plus cartoon friends, and lots more.

On Monday, in Adeje?s municipal football grounds, there will be a children?s park from 11am, with bouncy castles, workshops, etc, and entry is free.

The following day, the Plaza de Espa?a, hosts a ?Gran Circo Komba? at 6.30pm. It is an interactive theatre presentation, which is also free to the public.

And next Saturday (20th Oct), from 5pm, the Calle Grande will be taken over by children?s activities, on the last weekend of the patronal festival.
