Default Canarian Weekly: Heavy snow leaves motorists stranded

SPAIN’S Government was forced to deployed 250 soldiers on Sunday to help rescue hundreds of drivers, who were trapped overnight in vehicles as heavy snowfalls cut off several roads.

The Army’s UME emergency unit sent two companies of specialists, along with 95 vehicles, to free hundreds of cars stranded on the highway linking Madrid and the north-western city of Segovia.

The emergency unit wrote on Twitter: “There are many trapped vehicles on the AP6, but we are working without rest to advance, kilometre by kilometre, to reach everyone as soon as possible. We we are on it!”

Soldiers and firefighters, who used snowploughs to try to clear the snow, also distributed blankets and hot drinks to motorists.

The dreadful weather arrived as many Spaniards travelled home at the end of the festive holidays.

Motorists took to social media to complain that they had been trapped on the highway since last Saturday night.

Sara Ramos, stranded overnight with her husband and two children, aged two and six, said she had not eaten since lunchtime on Saturday.

“Some cars have run out of gas,” she told Spanish public television by telephone. “We are starting to get worried.”

By Tuesday, more than 700 snow-ploughs were said to have been put on standby to keep the roads open as 12 provinces were put on alert for snow, while other regions were warned to expect freezing temperatures and heavy rain.
